Infomation

“Just around the corner of the famous IJ Beer Brewery windmill, you’ll find the Czaar Peterstraat, named after Tsar Peter the Great. The Russian Tsar lived here at the end of the 17th century to study shipbuilding. When the area around it was developing from docklands to a housing area, Czaar Peterstraat evolved with it. The street used to be a ‘no go area’ for a length of time. When you dared entering in this area, you would end up in no-man’s land. Historically poor, it was an area where prostitution, drinking, drugs and violence predominated. Nowadays it developed from poverty and misery into a nice mixture of old & new, delicacy & roughness, high class & back to basics, all mixed in a nice blend of houses and shops. The street feels like an ‘open-air warehouse’ and offers a wide variety of nice boutiques. Stroll through the Czaar Peterstraat; from here walk to Frank’s Smokehouse around the corner, IJ Beer brewery in the mill, The Scheepvaartmuseum or the Artis Zoo. Tram 10 also stops and goes from here. You will find modern art, jewellery, clothing & shoes for men, women and kids, small & large presents, old & new and furthermore the street offers the best of Dutch cheese, wine and has a great variaty in specialised food.”
