The recently revamped district of Oostpoort is located on the old premises of the Oostergasfabriek. This old gas factory was – along with the Westergasfabriek – Amsterdam’s main gas supplier. Converted back in 2004, the Westergasfabriek is now an established hub for culture, food and nightlife. Just like Westergasfabriek, there are high expectations for this neighborhood in the borough Amsterdam Oost.
Around Muiderpoort
Amsterdam-Oost is a bustling part of town. The culturally mixed neighborhood offers a great variety entertainment. The Tropenmuseum, the museum for the tropics, located in the grand building of the former Dutch institute for the colonies, has a renowned permanent collection and interesting temporary exhibitions.
The newly renovated Beukenplein has much to offer when it comes to bars and cafés. Close by you can find the Volkshotel with restaurant Canvas and terrace at the seventh floor offering spectacular views over Amsterdam. In the weekends the restaurant is converted to a booming club.
